Texas, amalgamated

Texas is a ginormous country onto itself. Subtracting the breaks we took in Terlingua and Austin, it took us six days of continual driving to cross it. Below are some selected photo-highlights…

We speculated that Looney Tunes must have been graphically influenced by southwestern Texas geography -- Wily Coyote chases Roadrunner off the sharp blade-like plateau into thin air and turns into an anvil? & by the way—Roadrunner? What a lame name for such an elegant, thoughtful creature! We met one hiking in the Big Bend who picked its way delicately up the slope and vanished in a cloud of camouflage. 

Iraan, Tx

Iraan had too comical a name not to stop and look around (Jennie’s family from Tehran). The local barbecue tasted good as we wolfed it down, but we might have guessed from the restaurant courtyard—kitschy skeletons and all—that our fates would slip south…That evening we both underwent a delirium of meat-sweats and -spins. Phoo.

Cafeteria-style lunch somewhere between Christoval and Austin… Never before tried a Sawdust pie: coconut, pecans, graham crackers, bananas, whipped topping — & I probably won’t again. The bananas really skewed the flavor.
