We visited New Orleans. Most of what we did was eat baked goods. However, we also walked around a good bit, visited several bookstores, saw a friend and bought some extraordinarily sweet honey from a farmer from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Time and place: the extra-sensory amerikan phenomenon of wandering down a touristy, gentrified street and stopping to read a miscellaneous plaque about the slave market that used to occur on this thoroughfare... Still there were a few public sound installations that gave haunting mnemonic voice to all that history, too. The mosaic mural above is "Viñales (Mayombe, Mississippi) 2019" by Teresita Fernández and expresses the movement of American history.
As for bakeries, tops goes to Levee Baking Co, with honorable mentions to Buttermilk Drop, Ayu and Leon's. Sadly, several unmentionables, too. Jennie's vote for top gluten-free treat is the fruit-tartlet at Ayu.
